But if your goal is to be generous and practice charity, keeping such an amount for yourself will be contrary to your definition of success.

Setting goals is a process; it begins with careful thoughts of the things you want to achieve and working hard/smart to make that a reality. There are some essential steps in goal setting that transcend the specifics of every goal you set. You can quickly formulate the goals you want to achieve by knowing these steps.

1. Only set goals that will motivate you

Setting goals that motivate you is crucial to achieving them. You need to set goals that matter a lot to you and offer value when completed. If your interest in the outcome is little or irrelevant, you may only put little work to achieve them given the bigger picture. One of the critical factors in achieving your goals is motivation. 

Make sure the goals you set can relate to your priorities. If you lack this type of focus, you will have many goals and little or no time to devote or achieve any. You need to be committed to achieving your goals. Thus, feeling a sense of urgency and having an affirmative attitude – “I must make it happen” – will maximize the likelihood of being successful. You will not be able to access the resources you need to accomplish the goals you set if you lack this. As a result, you may end up feeling frustrated and disappointed in yourself. This can also negatively affect your mindset, making you think that you cannot succeed at anything you do.

2. Have SMART goals

You are already familiar with the term SMART goals. But the question is, do you apply it when setting goals? Having SMART goats will teach you how to set goals that are powerful and well designed. What SMART stands for has many variations, but the main thing is that your goals should be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-bound.

You will not benefit from having generalized or vague goals because they do not offer sufficient direction. Your goals must be clear and well-defined. You need to set goals that will show you the path to follow. By having a clear and precise definition of where you want to be, you can quickly figure out how to get there and the resources or skills you need to get there.

Set Measurable goals       

Ensure you include precise dates, time, amount, and so on when setting goals; this allows you to measure how close you are to succeeding or accomplishing them. How will you know that you have achieved if your goal is defined as “To minimize expenses?” If you have a reduction of 1% in a month or a reduction of 10% in 2 years. If there is no measure for success when setting goals, you won’t be able to identify or tell when you have actually accomplished something.

Have Attainable goals

Do not set goals you know you cannot achieve. Doing so will only erode your confidence and demoralize you in the process. To prevent that, ensure it is possible to accomplish the goals you set. In as much as it is essential to have attainable goals, do not fall into the temptation of setting goals that you can easily accomplish. Achieving goals that you did not put much effort into can be anticlimactic. Also, it can make you worried or scared if you want to set goals in the future that may carry a risk of non-achievement. Ensure the goals you set are relevant to the direction you want your career or life to take. When your goals are aligned with your life/career direction, you will be more focused on what you want and how to get it. If your goals are scattered and inconsistent, you will end up wasting your time.

Set Time-Bound goals

Ensure you set deadlines for your goals. Doing this will help you know when to celebrate success. When you have a deadline for your goals, it will increase your sense of urgency and help you achieve your goals.

3. Write down your goals.

Writing down the goals you want to achieve makes them real and tangible. It takes away any excuse that will make you forget the goals you set. When writing down your goals, ensure you use “will” instead of “might” or “would like to.” For example, instead of writing down, “I would love to reduce my expenses by 20% this year,” use “I will reduce my expenses this year by 20%.” The first statement lacks passion and presents excuses if you become distracted. The second statement has passion and power, which gives you the drive you need to get it done.

When you write your goals down, make them visible. Place it somewhere you get to see it often to serve as a reminder. You can place your write-up on the refrigerator, mirror, desk, wall, or any place you can easily see it.

4. Have an action plan

People tend to skip this step when setting goals. They become too focused on the results and forget about planning all the steps required to achieve them. When you write out each step required and crossing them one after the order after completing them, you will discover that you are getting closer towards your ultimate goal. This part is essential when learning how to set goals, especially if your goal is demanding or will require a longer time to achieve.

5. Stick with it

Do not forget, setting goals is a continuous process and not something you will do once and stop. Have reminders to tell if you are on the right track, and create regular time-slots to review the goals you set. The results you are hoping to accomplish may be similar over the long term; however, the action plan you have may be subjected to change. Ensure the value, necessity, and relevance remain high.
